Let us march in the light of God and may life win!
Message from the Catholic Organization for Life and Family
On the occasion the 2015 National March for Life
“We are marching in the light of God ! We are marching in the light of God !” … So proclaims the much loved South African children’s song “Siyahamba”. On the occasion of the 2015 National March for Life, the Catholic Organization of Life and Family (COLF) reminds us all that human life is – from its beginning until its natural end– a divine gift; and that in defending life we are “marching” in the light of God – in whom life has its origin and in whom it finds its destiny.
Some might argue that one need not be a person of faith to recognize that human life has a unique value. They would be right. But, if the violence of the last hundred years have taught us anything, it is that the rejection of God and of God’s law lead inevitably to a loss of respect for creation and, most especially, a loss of respect for human life, which, outside the “light of God”, becomes a disposable play thing. Outside the “light of God”, the human person is consigned to a place of darkness where decisions over life and death, based on shadowy half-truths, are followed, in many instances at least, by a lifetime of bitter regret.
Fifty years ago the Second Vatican Council taught that “Christ the new Adam . . . fully reveals man to himself and brings to light his most high calling” (Gaudium et Spes, 22). In the light of Christ we see the difficult choices which life sometimes presents with clarity and are empowered to choose rightly – to let life win! In union with Christ we are empowered to be men and women for others: for the weak and powerless, the unborn; for the sick, the marginalized and the dying. In union with Christ we are empowered to live according to the divine plan for our sexuality, to seek the welfare of the other and to make a sincere gift of self in the vocation to which God has called us.
Human life is of inestimable value because of its origin and of its ultimate calling in God for eternity. March in the light of God and let life win!
