Caritas Japan Press release
March 13, 2011

Caritas Japan stands in solidarity with all people who were affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami in Northern part of Japan.
On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami hit northeast of Japan. Right after the earthquake, Caritas Japan started collecting information to meet the needs of most vulnerable people among victims.

The president of Caritas Japan, Bp. Isao Kikuchi, SVD said “We have received so many emails from all continents, filled with words of compassion and prayer. We are very grateful for this solidarity. We believe that aid activity is needed, but prayer is also important in such a situation.”

Caritas Japan has begun domestic donation campaign on 12th. It is still very difficult to communicate with Sendai through the phone, but in the afternoon on 13th, we could talk with the diocesan chancellor of the Sendai Diocese. We will soon start our relief activities in Sendai and other area, particularly to meet the needs of the people who have no access to public service.

Also, Caritas Japan will concentrate its effort much more for the rehabilitation phase. Since devastating effects of earthquake and tsunami induce not only physical damages, but also mental one. We will accompany people who lost their beloved, who lost everything and may stay at temporary shelter, and who have no one to rely on.

Like so many people all over the world praying for the people of Japan, we Caritas Japan accompany with people who are in grave situation.

Caritas Japan is a committee of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan, as well as a member of the confederation of Caritas Internationalis, working in the field of development, relief and social welfare.
